In May 2011, I visited the American Philosophical Society Library in Philadelhpia, PA for two days to examine and document the known sources on Chitimacha. APS is where Morris Swadesh‘s materials are located, which is by far the best and most thorough documentation we have on the language. Also at the APS is the first written record of the language, a Jefferson wordlist by Martin Duralde, which was later sent to Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson himself then incorporated the wordlist into his comparative vocabulary of Native American languages, which you can see images of below.
